4×5 Ground Glass
The ground glass in a 4x5 view camera is essentially the same as that located in any other through the lens focusing camera. (This is excluding rangefinder cameras.) The main difference in 4x5 cameras is how obvious it’s presence is. The ground glass of a view camera makes up the back end of the camera, opposite the lens. The way this component gets its name is due to the fact that one side of the glass is quite literally ground down in order to leave it with a frosted finish. This is done so that the light falling on it through the lens is able to leave an image viewable by the 4x5 camera operator.

A quality piece of ground glass can be a really magnificent thing to behold while under a dark cloth focusing your view camera. I know that one of the things that really got me hooked on 4x5 photography was looking at my composition upside down and backwards sitting there on that ground glass existing only in light.
